dangers of problem trees

Quick Summary: Dead, diseased, or damaged trees can create serious risks for homes, vehicles, neighbors, and anyone walking nearby. Warning signs like bare branches, fungus at the base, trunk cracks, peeling bark, sudden leaning, or soil lifting should not be ignored. In Kalamazoo, storms, heavy snow, wet soil, and freeze-thaw cycles can make weakened trees more likely to drop limbs, uproot, or fall without much warning.

Last Updated: 06/29/2026

Dead or damaged trees are more than an eyesore, they are a problem waiting to happen. In Kalamazoo, the mix of large hardwoods and unpredictable weather creates real safety and property risks when a tree is weak, diseased, or fully dead.

Heavy snow, high winds, and saturated ground can turn a compromised tree into a serious hazard without warning. Knowing what to look for can help you protect your home, your family, and your neighbors. The experienced team at TreeFellers shares some solid tree advice below.

Why Dead or Diseased Trees Are So Dangerous

1. Structural Instability and Unexpected Falls

Internal decay weakens a tree from the inside. Oaks, ash, maples, and cottonwoods in Southwest Michigan are especially vulnerable to hidden rot that you cannot always see from the outside. When storms roll through, a weakened trunk or limb can snap with little notice.

2. Falling Limbs That Create Serious Hazards

A dead limb high in a canopy may break loose at any time. Maples and cottonwoods in the area tend to drop heavy limbs as they decline. These falling branches can damage a roof, land on a vehicle, or injure someone walking underneath.

3. Root Damage and Uprooting Risks

A tree with root rot can look stable until the soil becomes saturated. Kalamazoo often experiences wet conditions in spring and fall. When roots are compromised, even light winds can cause the entire tree to uproot and fall.

Safety Risks for Homeowners and Neighbors

1. Property Damage

Dead or diseased trees can fall onto roofs, garages, sheds, fences, or vehicles. The cost of repairing the damage is often far higher than the cost of removing the tree before it fails.

2. Personal Injury Risks

A weak tree can drop a limb without sound or warning. Children, pets, or visitors are often the ones most exposed to this danger.

3. Liability Issues

Michigan law expects homeowners to maintain reasonably safe conditions on their property. If a clearly dead or diseased tree falls into a neighbor’s yard and causes damage, you may be responsible. Keeping documentation of inspections and recommended actions is always a wise step.

How to Spot a Dead or Diseased Tree Before It Falls

Use this quick guide to understand which tree warning signs may point to a bigger safety problem.

Warning Signs of a Problem Tree

Warning Sign What It May Mean Recommended Next Step
Bare branches during the growing season Branches that do not leaf out may be dead, declining, or structurally weak. Have the tree inspected before dead limbs fall over a yard, driveway, or walkway.
Mushrooms or fungus near the base Fungal growth can be a sign of decay or root problems that weaken stability. Schedule an assessment, especially if the tree is near a structure or high-traffic area.
Large cracks, cavities, or splitting Visible trunk damage may indicate internal decay or a higher chance of breakage. Call a professional before storms or heavy winds increase the risk of failure.
Peeling bark in large sections Major bark loss can signal disease, decline, or a dead section of the tree. Watch for additional signs of decline and get a professional opinion if the damage is spreading.
Sudden lean or lifting soil A new lean or raised soil may point to root movement, root rot, or instability. Treat this as urgent if the tree is leaning toward a home, garage, driveway, sidewalk, or power line.
Dead limbs over walkways or driveways Dead branches can break loose without warning and cause injury or property damage. Avoid standing or parking underneath the limb and arrange safe trimming or removal.

Early Warning Signs You Can Look For

  • Branches that remain bare during the growing season
  • Mushrooms or fungus growing around the base
  • Large cracks or cavities forming in the trunk
  • Bark peeling off in large sections
  • A sudden lean or soil lifting on one side of the tree

Pests and Diseases Common in Kalamazoo

The region has several aggressive pests and diseases that attack hardwoods.

  • Emerald ash borer has destroyed most ash trees in the area
  • Oak wilt can rapidly kill red oak species
  • Dutch elm disease still affects American elms
  • Fire blight impacts fruit trees
  • Needle cast affects many spruce trees

Each of these issues can weaken wood structure and increase the chance of unexpected failure.

Why DIY Tree Cutting Is Dangerous (And Costly)

1. Unpredictable Fall Paths

Dead trees behave differently from healthy ones when cut. Wood can snap or twist in unexpected ways. The fall direction is often hard to control.

2. Equipment Hazards

Chainsaws, ladders, and ropes require experience to use safely. Dead branches can break off during cutting and strike anyone standing below.

3. Local Factors That Make DIY Riskier

Kalamazoo neighborhoods often have tall oaks and maples, narrow lot lines, and nearby power lines. Wet ground or uneven terrain can also make it difficult to control equipment or footing.

Sure, anyone can pull out a chainsaw and cut down a tree. But planning fall direction, isolating your cuts, and ensuring safety for life and property is something different.

And if the tree is diseased or dead, multiply the difficulty level by at least 20. Just watch these popular YouTubers cut down this leaning tree with precision and skill, and this was a healthy tree. The average DIY’er doesn’t have this level of experience.

When to Call a Professional Tree Removal Team in Kalamazoo

Situations That Need Immediate Attention

  • Any tree that is leaning toward a home or structure
  • Dead branches hanging over driveways or walkways
  • Signs of active pest infestation
  • Visible cracks, hollows, or splitting in the trunk

Why a Professional Inspection Matters

A qualified expert can identify internal damage, assess fall risk, and determine whether trimming or full removal is the safest option. While an arborist can diagnose disease, you are not required to use one before scheduling trimming or removal. Most homeowners simply need someone who can safely take the tree down before it becomes a problem. Make sure you work with a company that has experience across the entire service area.

What the Tree Removal Process Looks Like

A typical removal includes an on-site assessment followed by a safety setup that protects your home, lawn, and nearby structures. Crews remove the tree in controlled sections, lowering each piece safely to the ground.

Once the trunk and canopy are cleared, the team can remove the stump or leave it in place based on your preference. The final step is a complete cleanup so your yard is left neat and safe.

Protecting Your Property Before the Next Storm

Preventive Maintenance

Regular trimming, removing large dead limbs, and addressing early signs of decline can prevent major damage. Large hardwoods benefit from periodic inspection so problems can be treated early.

Why Kalamazoo Weather Makes Prevention Essential

The area experiences heavy lake effect snow, severe summer storms, high winds, and frequent freeze and thaw cycles. Any tree that is already weakened becomes more dangerous during these weather events.

Dead or diseased trees should never be ignored. Identifying problems early protects your home, prevents injuries, and saves thousands in potential repairs. If you notice warning signs or simply want peace of mind, scheduling a professional tree removal or trimming service is the safest and most reliable way to secure your property.

Frequently Asked Questions About Problem Trees

How do I know if a tree is dangerous?

A tree may be dangerous if it has large dead branches, cracks in the trunk, hollow areas, peeling bark, fungus near the base, exposed or lifting roots, or a sudden lean. A tree that is close to a house, garage, driveway, sidewalk, or power line should be taken especially seriously because failure could cause injury or property damage.

What are the signs that a tree needs to be removed?

Common signs include major decay, large dead limbs, severe storm damage, a split trunk, root rot, mushrooms around the base, or more than half of the tree appearing dead or damaged. The Arbor Day Foundation notes that a tree may need removal for safety if 50 percent or more is dead or damaged. A professional tree service can inspect the tree and determine whether trimming, treatment, or removal is the safest option.

Can a leaning tree be saved?

Some trees naturally grow with a slight lean and may not be unsafe. A new lean, a lean that is getting worse, cracked soil, or lifting roots can be a warning sign that the tree is losing stability. If the tree is leaning toward a structure, road, driveway, or play area, it should be inspected as soon as possible.

Is a dead tree always dangerous?

A dead tree becomes more dangerous over time because the wood dries out, weakens, and becomes more likely to break. Dead limbs can fall without warning, and the trunk or roots may no longer be strong enough to keep the tree upright. Even if a dead tree is not touching anything now, it can become a serious hazard during wind, rain, snow, or ice.

What should I do if a tree has fungus or mushrooms growing near it?

Fungus or mushrooms near the base of a tree can be a sign of decay in the trunk or roots. Not every mushroom means the tree is about to fall, but it is a reason to have the tree checked, especially if you also notice soft wood, cavities, dead branches, or leaning. Root decay can reduce the tree’s ability to stay anchored in the ground.

Who is responsible if my tree falls on a neighbor’s property?

Responsibility can depend on the condition of the tree, the cause of the fall, insurance coverage, and local rules. In many cases, storm-related damage from an otherwise healthy tree is handled by the property owner whose property was damaged. If the tree was dead, diseased, or visibly hazardous and the owner ignored the problem, liability may be different. Because tree liability can vary, homeowners should document concerns, contact their insurance company, and address hazardous trees before they fail.

Can I trim branches from my neighbor’s tree if they hang over my yard?

In Michigan, property owners may generally trim branches that extend over their property line, but they should not cross onto a neighbor’s property without permission. Trimming should also be done carefully because damaging or killing the tree can create legal and financial issues. When a tree near a property line is unhealthy or hazardous, it is usually best to talk with the neighbor first and involve a professional if needed.

Are storm-damaged trees more likely to fall later?

Yes. A tree that survives a storm can still be weakened by broken limbs, trunk cracks, root movement, or hidden structural damage. Heavy snow, ice, strong wind, saturated soil, and freeze-thaw cycles can all make an already weakened tree more likely to fail later. After a major storm, inspect trees from a safe distance and call a professional if you see hanging limbs, splitting, leaning, or uprooted soil.

Should I remove a problem tree myself?

DIY tree removal can be dangerous, especially when the tree is large, leaning, storm-damaged, close to a structure, or near power lines. Problem trees can shift unexpectedly, split under tension, or drop heavy limbs without warning. Professional crews have the equipment and training to remove hazardous trees safely while reducing the risk to nearby property.

How often should I have trees inspected?

Homeowners should visually check their trees at least a few times a year and after major storms. Trees near homes, driveways, sidewalks, garages, fences, or power lines may need closer attention because the risk is higher if they fail. If you notice decay, dead limbs, leaning, fungus, root problems, or repeated branch drop, schedule a professional inspection instead of waiting for the next storm.

Really experience: I have 1.6 acres with 30+ oak trees, most of them over 150 years old and many sitting very close to my house. I talked to a few tree service companies and the prices were all pretty similar, but the Tree Fellers' estimator stood out right away. He understood my situation, explained everything clearly, and even sent me their insurance policy without me asking. One of the trees they removed was about 10 feet from my house and over 100 feet tall, so this wasn’t an easy job. They gave me an estimated timeframe, they originally said end of May, the crew arrived at the beginning of June. The crew: Dave, Alex, and Jamie. There were all great guys and extremely polite and professional. They cleaned up everything, and they even hauled away an extra fallen tree in my backyard that was around 120 feet long and 3 feet wide, all for a fair price. These guys are the real deal. If you’re looking for a tree service, don’t look any farther.- Tree work: 5⭐- Crew knowledge & professionalism: 5⭐- Scheduling: 4.9⭐Highly recommended.

Made a call, Jack was out the same day to get me a quote on the spot. I had 6 large trees removed from around my house. The process was explained as to what type of equipment would be used and how long it would take. After getting on the list I was called and informed Dave and his crew would be out to start work. I was fairly nervous with trees getting taken down right over my house, but that quickly went away watching how Dave and the crew were doing their work. They made sure to take care with their job and I was surprised how quickly they took down one tree after the next. They cleaned up after themselves and after the job was done I had asked if they would make sure my neighbors yard was cleaned up before they left( work was done close to the property line,) they took the time to ask my neighbor if the clean up was sufficient for them. All in all I would highly suggest Tree Fellers for any tree work needing done. They will be my call for any future work I need done.

They trimmed a large tree for us, did a great job, great clean up and fair prices. This past summer, the tree started dying, now a huge mess of falling branches, bark and no leaves. I wish they would have told me it would kill the tree, I would have had it all removed. This is an amazing company and they reached out regarding this review to talk about my concerns.

I had one tree down and a second hung up on a third, hanging precariously over the street, after the winds last week. After the city decided that the one hanging over the street wasn’t their problem, Tree Fellers came out to assess and had it down within an hour. They got rid of the root ball that the city left for me as well. They left the yard cleaner than it was when the trees were standing. This is why they are always my first call after a storm.

Excellent crew from start to finish. They removed three large oak trees that were overhanging my property, and the entire process was handled professionally. Communication was clear and consistent, especially from Harold, who was great to work with as the main point of contact. Their pricing also came in better than three other estimates I received, which made the decision easy.

Discussed all options with me and came back within a week to have the job done. Crew was communicative, prompt, responsible, and cleaned up after themselves. HIGHLY, HIGHLY recommend. Last year I had a large old tree get uprooted in a very tight to access area. They scoped it out, helped with a plan that would need the least amount of fence removal & lawn damage, & took care of the entire thing in a very quick manner. Tree root ball & all! The most appreciative part was how thorough they cleaned up afterwards. Especially in my neighbors driveway they needed to borrow access to.Very kind & professional!

I reached out to Tree Fellers when my usual tree service stopped providing good customer service/pricing. I had an unexpected/last minute need for tree removal and holes dug to transplant fruit trees from my greenhouse before Michigan winter hit us for real. Jack/Isiah and their team helped me coordinate this project for a much better price and responded promptly/professionally to my questions and need for adjustments to the work. The crew was polite and respectful, and dig a great job in some nasty weather! I highly recommend this company, especially if you need something random done in conjunction with tree service like I did. They saved me thousands of dollars that I would have had to spend with a different landscaping company to get my fruit trees moved.

Saw Tree Fellers doing some storm cleanup in the neighborhood and they had the equipment to take down a tree that I had growing over my garage that had destroyed the gutter and was threatening the roof. I gave them a call and they got me on the schedule. There was a lot of storm damage in the area, so it took a few weeks to get to me, but when they showed up they were clean and efficient. They even cut up some of the trunk into smaller lengths so I could split them for firewood and cleaned up everything else. Highly recommended.

Clayton and his team did a beautiful job removing multiple large branches and trees in my yard, as well as clearing away downed branches and several brush piles. Some of the situations required very skilled handling and creative solutions. Clayton clearly really knows what he's doing and is very good at it. He and his team worked hard. They were competent, efficient, thorough, respectful, and considerate. To protect sensitive areas, they had to haul everything out by hand, which they did without complaint. During the recent storms with strong winds, a large tree uprooted. My insurance agent warned me about price gouging and I think I did witness that, based on some of the quotes I received. Tree Fellers did not price gouge. Their price was significantly less than the other quotes I received. They removed the tree, filled in the hole and cleaned up. Very happy with their service and recommend them 100%.
